What Buyers Really Think About Their Agents

What Buyers Really Think About Their Agents

This week, our Burning Question was for Ann Montgomery, CEO of Nabewise.com, which collects data on neighborhoods around the country. Montgomery is swimming in data about what people are looking for when they buy a home, so we asked about her findings from a Nabewise white paper that looked at just that.

LinkedIn: What are buyers are most worried about when they're looking to relocate?
Montgomery: We did a white paper, and we found that 51 percent of people said that the number one most important part of moving, the hardest thing to deal with, was not having good real estate information. You can get local statistics, you can get census data, but understanding what a neighborhood is actually like is really difficult.

LinkedIn: What about real estate agents? Do people feel they can get that information from them?
Montgomery: Interestingly, we asked whether people used agents to find neighborhood information, and only 25 percent of people said yes. So we asked why, and people said they felt that agents were biased, and they just wanted to sell them a house.
And we do hear from agents that they don’t want to share neighborhood data that’s really negative. But people really wanted a full picture. They wanted to know how the locals feel about the neighborhood. They felt it would be better if agents pointed them to third party information like websites.
But hiding information or only giving information that will help sell a house is really archaic thinking. Consumers will find out anyway, and you’ll just lose trust.
