Easyjet magazine: article about a surf trip to Cascais and Ericeira

Ericeira Attractions

The town dates back to the 12th century, and you can see the Portuguese history in the stunning architecture of the older buildings. The chapels and whitewashed houses make for a beautiful stroll through the town just admiring the local charm, before stopping off at a café or restaurant for some delicious regional cuisine.

Ericeira is considered a haven for foodies on the Lisbon coast. Lobsters are bred in serrações along the coast, so expect lobster to be a speciality in the nearby restaurants. The local harbour provides an abundance of other fresh fish and seafood, and any restaurant you come across will be full of delicious fresh dishes.

There are plenty of bars located in town, so make sure you stop for a cocktail on your way back from the beach. They are all open until the early hours, including the Ourico – the oldest nightclub in Portugal!

Beaches in Ericeira

As well as surfing, there are stunning beaches around Ericeira good for swimming and a lazy day’s sunbathing. A favourite is the crescent-shaped ‘south beach,’ Praia do Sol. With its beautiful golden sand it is popular with locals and visitors. Collectively, Ericeira’s beaches are recognised by the World Surfing Reserve for being perfect for catching waves. Best known is the Ribeira beach, the site of several surfing events. Don’t worry if you’re no expert – there are areas available for people learning to surf, too! If you’re lucky enough to be on holiday to Ericeria when these events are on, plenty of parties and gigs will be happening on the beach, so be sure to check it out.

Around an hour away is Cascais, a lovely beachside resort home to the famous surfing beach Praia do Guincho. Cascais also has a variety of markets and a great café culture, making it perfect for an excursion. A stroll along its pretty seafront promenade will take you to the chic resort of Estoril, with its picturesque beaches and boutique hotels, known for being a glamorous and cosmopolitan place to visit.
