Looks like something out of a James Bond movie? You’d be right! Hotel Palacio in Estoril was one of the locations used for the filming of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service in 1969, the movie known for bridging the gap between Sean Connery and Roger Moore as 007.
George Lazenby was Bond and the movie showed to mixed critical acclaim, but that has nothing to do with stunning settings and scenery. Filmed on location in Portugal, Switzerland and England, it does of course always bear the hallmark Bond style and glamour. The Hotel Palacio has retained its five star elegance in the intervening years, modernizing itself to include a Banyan Tree spa and conveniently next door to the Estoril casino. It’s also a gentle stroll from Cascais, another location used in the movie and the famous Guincho beach where the opening sequences of the movie were filmed.
So whether you are looking for an iconic hotel for a luxury beach holiday, or a stunning film location for your next production, Hotel Palacio has still got what it takes. And the welcoming doorman will probably remember the shooting of the movie if you ask, having been working there for over 40 years!
If film production rather than holiday style is what you’re thinking of, check out Prinz Productions who have film production offices in Lisbon and can facilitate at this or other locations in Portugal.
